Hinton, Alberta, Canada has a population near 10,000, and is 270 km west of Edmonton and 80 km east of Jasper. It is a short 15-minute drive to Jasper National Park boundary and about 3 hours from the world famous West Edmonton Mall.

The Town, incorporated in 1956, has developed over the last five decades with the establishment of a pulp mill in the 50's and modern coal mines in the 70's and 80's. The mill is one of the most up-to-date and profitable pulp mills in the country, having undergone expansion and modernization over the last few years.

Hinton has developed in two separate areas, about 5 km apart, known to residents as the Hill and the Valley - separated by the pulp mill. This geographical dispersion is accounted for by the fact that Hinton actually started out as two communities - Drinnan and Hinton.

Recreational facilities are excellent, with a 25-meter indoor pool, a toddler pool, hot tub and sauna, racquetball and squash courts, 2 arenas, an excellent daycare facility, and a curling rink.

The Town boasts a number of tennis courts and baseball diamonds, together with an excellent golf course and world class cross- country skiing facility. There is also a stock car track west of town, and a public campground within the town limits.

With the mountains next door the opportunities for camping, hiking, downhill skiing, fishing, and hunting are numerous.

Hinton's Municipal Library provides residents with an excellent choice of over 40,000 books, CDs, DVDs, talking books, magazines as well as free internet access to all members.

Schooling is good, with three elementary schools, a high school which has recently completed renovations, and a Separate School Board. There is also an excellent community college which offers several programs, including first year university courses.

A privately operated environmental training center also provides courses for adults.

Medical facilities are unparalleled, with walk-in clinics in both Hill and Valley districts. Our hospital brings in specialists from Edmonton on a regular basis, and offers regional services for the communities of Edson and Jasper. We also have a large health unit.

Lions Sunset Manor and Pine Valley Seniors Lodge provide accomodation for self-sufficient senior citizens. The Good Samaritan Mountain View Centre is an assissted accommodation facility attached to the hospital.  It has a 52 bed extended care facility which has 25 beds full care and 27 beds assisted living.

Convention and banquet facilities are available at the Hinton Center as well as many of the local hotels.

Accommodations offered in the local area run from teepees with bed and breakfast service, to full-featured hotels with indoor swimming pools and restaurants. Some facilities also have night clubs, for partygoers who enjoy after dark activities.
